Bill Spence has worked within the green industry since the 1960's and is currently a consultant helping organizations better manage their properties throughout the world. He frequently presents to national and international groups and continues to teach at the University of Massachusetts and other institutions.  

EXPERIENCE

1979 to Present: Principal, Spence Golf and Greenspace, LLC

1985-2018:  Director of Grounds, The Country Club, Brookline, MA

Initiated and executed numerous course improvement programs and projects related to membership use and major tournaments, including, but not limited to:

  • Significant course rebuilding
  • Enhancement projects
  • Water supply expansion
  • Landscape and tree programs
  • Installation of two state of the art irrigation and pumping systems
  • Served on the executive committees for all major golf events held at TCC

Instrumental in the organization, planning and execution of professional events, as well as numerous state and local championship events:

  • 1988 US Open Championship
  • 1995 US Women's Amateur Championship
  • 1999 Ryder Cup Matches
  • 2013 US Men's Amateur Championship
  • 2022 Preliminary Planning for US Open Championship

1978-1984: Grounds Superintendent at Kansas City Country Club, Mission Hills, KS

  • Planned and installed new irrigation system
  • Executed major bunker re-building
  • Executed green renovation and rebuilding
  • Planned and implemented construction of new maintenance building
  • Implemented extensive landscape and tree programs
  • Initiated long-range golf course master plan
  • Worked closely with professional golfer and club member, Tom Watson, who was instrumental in many golf course projects and served as an incredible resource regarding championship course conditions and management.

1975-1978: Head Superintendent, Pebble Beach Corporation, Pebble Beach, CA.

  • Managed all outdoor operations at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill, Old Del Monte and Peter Hay Golf Courses
  • Managed 85 miles of equestrian trails and polo field
  • Managed two driving ranges

Instrumental in the organization, planning and execution of professional events, as well as numerous state and local championship events:

  • Bing Crosby Pro-Am played annually at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill
  • 1977 PGA Championship at Pebble Beach

1974-1975:  Golf Course Superintendent, Monmouth County Park System, Lincroft, NJ. 

  • Managed two golf courses
  • Executed master plan and green rebuilding
  • Participated in acquisition of a third course

Editor of quarterly magazine devoted to green industry professionals

Consulting regularly for private and municipal properties throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

Native of Middletown, NJ. 

He and his wife Elisa live in Lexington, MA.

Interests include running, cycling, swimming and music.
