Bill Spence has worked within the green industry since the 1960's and is currently working on a consulting basis to help organizations better manage their properties.
Most recently, Bill was employed at The Country Club in Brookline MA beginning in 1985 and retired from the position of Director of Grounds to pursue another professional chapter. While at TCC the club hosted the 1988 US Open, 1995 US Women's Amateur Championship, 1999 Ryder Cup and 2013 US Men's Amateur Championship, along with numerous state and local championships during his tenure. The Club will be hosting the US Open Championship in 2022.
Bill initiated and was involved with numerous course improvement programs and projects related to the membership use and major tournament requirements during his time there. These include significant course rebuilding and enhancement projects, water supply expansion, landscape and tree programs and the installation of two state of the art irrigation and pumping systems. He has served on the executive committees for all major golf events held at TCC.
Prior to The Country Club, he served as Grounds Superintendent at Kansas City Country Club in Mission Hills, Kansas from 1978 until 1985. During that time, Bill had the chance to meet and work very closely with professional golfer and club member Tom Watson. Tom was involved in many of the golf course projects and served as an incredible resource to Bill’s understanding of how golf’s top player engages varying course conditions and manages them competitively.
Bill also served as the Head Superintendent at Pebble Beach Corporation in Pebble Beach California from 1975 until 1978. In this position, Bill was exposed to professional golf annually at the Bing Crosby Pro-Am played at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill and the 1977 PGA Championship held at Pebble Beach. In addition, he had the responsibility of managing Old Del Monte Golf Course, Peter Hay Golf Course, a five person landscape crew, 85 miles of equestrian trails, two driving ranges and a polo field.
Bill’s first position in the business was as the Golf Course Superintendent for the Monmouth County Park System in Lincroft New Jersey during 1974 and 1975. Here, Bill managed two golf courses and was involved in the acquisition of a third course at the time he was leaving to move to California.
Bill is a 1974 Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Massachusetts and continues with regular teaching and lectures at the school. While at UMass, Bill received several academic awards and recognition jn addition to editing a quarterly magazine devoted to green industry professionals and as a lab assistant to Dr. Joseph Troll. Bill recently was honored by the UMass Alumni Association for his contribution to the golf business and university.He has given many presentations for local, national and international organizations and has consulted regularly for properties throughout the US, Canada and Europe. He is a native of Middletown, New Jersey. He and his wife Elisa live in Lexington, MA.
